The Full Circle Doula Training Program began in 2003 and is sponsored by the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC). The brainchild of certified midwife and ICTC President, Shafia M. Monroe, the program is rooted in traditional and spiritual midwifery.

The honoring of birth, and the history of pregnancy, labor and postpartum care from various cultural perspectives is central to reducing both infant and maternal mortality within the most heavily impacted communities. This approach ensures that graduate doulas are fully empowered to impact a diverse population of pregnant women and families.

To date, the Full Circle Doula Training Program has successfully trained hundreds of women and men as doulas (birth companions) across the United States. Many of those graduates are working at churches, community health centers, birthing centers, hospitals, international villages, and as independent businesses. Some are specializing as postpartum, adoption, abortion or end of life doulas. Others have chosen to continue their education toward careers in medicine, nursing, midwifery, public health, and as women's health advocates. Some are simply supporting loved ones to have better birth outcomes.
